Bendigo Airport Upgrade project achieves key milestone

BMD Constructions has successfully achieved a key milestone at the Bendigo Airport Upgrade project in Victoria, with a new runway opening to aircraft in early February. The new runway increases the airport’s capacity and useability with the runway built to the requirements of a 3C aircraft weighing up to 30 tonnes. Previously, the airport was restricted to aircraft weighing up to 5,700 kilograms. During construction, safety has remained top of mind for the team with the project having achieved over 35,000 man hours lost time injury free. Local engagement has also been a priority for BMD with 90% of the project’s workforce sourced locally. BMD Constructions illustrated innovation during construction by treating onsite material, enabling it to be used as fill. This innovation delivered substantial cost savings to the client, allowing them to add an additional taxiway to the southern end of the runway, further increasing the airport’s capability and minimising disruption to large aircraft. Rachel Lee, Manager – Major Projects said City of Greater Bendigo has been impressed with the highly effective and collaborative BMD team. “BMD started this project with the aim of delivering a quality product for the region and we have been very happy with their work,” Rachel said. “They have understood and embraced the challenges that come with working in an airside environment and have delivered on their commitment of not significantly impacting airport operations,” she said. Following the opening of the new runway, BMD Constructions are continuing to construct two high strength taxiways and apron areas and one low strength taxiway. The project will be completed in May 2017, weather permitting.
