Future growth and sustainability at the forefront of BMD’s fleet management
BMD’s in-house vehicle fleet continues to growth and with it, comes our concentrated focus on a sustainable approach, driving change through our long-term partnerships, model range and positive contributions to minimise environmental impacts. At the forefront of this operation is BMD National Fleet Manager Nigel Scott who joined the BMD family three years ago when the total fleet count was at approximately 1100 nationwide. During this period, the team also saw the withdrawal of the Holden brand, which at the time was made up of around 900 Holden Colorado utes. Although this presented complications to BMD’s Australia-wide operations, the team cooperated with our long-term partnerships with Brisbane-based dealerships including Sci-Fleet and Bartons. Sci-Fleet, who fulfil BMD’s Toyota and Hino Tipper requirements, recently delivered its 100th Hino for BMD this year, illustrating the strength of our relationship, which has been built over 35 years. Working in close collaboration with supply chain partners and clients has granted the opportunity for BMD to transition our fleets management processes by implementing environmental best practices which align with our sustainability commitments. As part of BMD’s approach to sustainability, we drive environmental excellence by supporting innovation and technologies that reduce our carbon emissions. This has led to the implementation of electric vehicles and charging stations on various project sites, together with the trial of electric vehicle trucks from SEA Electric (which are based on Hino 300 Series cab chassis). In efforts to align with the Australian Government’s New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, Nigel is excited by the hybrid vehicles coming to market and incorporating these options into BMD’s strategic approach. “BMD is focused on incorporating hybrid options across our fleet, and I’m hoping a hybrid light commercial ute comes out soon in addition to the current EV options. “Hybrid utes and tippers would prove to be ideal options for BMD due to the vital role fuel plays for vehicles operating on remote site locations with limited access to the electrical grid,” Nigel said. “We are always looking into what’s coming up so that we can continue to integrate sustainable options, which is a core to our business strategy.” This significant transition also accompanies BMD’s trial of incorporating more eco-friendly plant and machinery throughout the day-to-day operations of our project sites, including electric telehandlers, forklifts, knuckle booms, elevated work platforms, handheld compactors and demolition saws. As Australia’s leading integrated engineering, construction, and urban development business, BMD recognise our responsibility to make a change through the way we do business. Whether that be through our specialised approach to vehicle fleet management or the use of sustainable and innovative materials and methods, we are committed to protecting and enhancing the environments in which we operate.
