Legacy Way tunnel breaks through

The Legacy Way project recently celebrated a major milestone, with the breakthrough of the project’s first tunnel boring machine, Joyce. Joyce has completed a record-breaking journey that saw her travel the 4.6 kilometre journey in just six months and five months ahead of the original program. Joyce’s breakthrough marks the culmination of more than two years of work and three million work hours, moving motorists one step closer to a four minute trip between Toowong and Kelvin Grove once Legacy Way opens in 2015. The breakthrough of Joyce in such a short timeframe is an amazing feat, and a credit to the team’s combined expertise and hard work. Since the commencement of construction, the Legacy Way project has achieved many successes including the record pace of the two tunnel boring machines, Annabell and Joyce. Both tunnel boring machines demonstrated outstanding levels of production with an average rate of excavation reaching more than 150 metres per week, setting the project at a world class level for production. To date, more than 50 per cent of the overall project has been completed along with more than 80 per cent of tunnel boring machine operations. The Brisbane City Council project is being delivered by the Transcity Joint Venture, which is comprised of BMD Constructions ACCIONA and Ghella. Once complete, the project will comprise twin, two-lane tunnels, 4.6 kilometres in length, connecting commuters between the Western Freeway at Toowong and the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove.
