BMD bolsters water sector capability with Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade contract
BMD Constructions has been awarded the Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade contract, marking another milestone project with Sydney Water. BMD will upgrade both the Richmond Water Recycling Plant (WRP) and North Richmond Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in North-Western Sydney, as population growth in Richmond and Upper Hawkesbury is projected to increase by 70% over the next 30 years. The scope involves building a new pump station at North Richmond, upgrading three existing pumping stations in Richmond and building a 6.9-kilometre-long transfer pipeline connecting the North Richmond system to the WRP. The Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade marks the second major project of BMD and Sydney Water’s relationship, with BMD currently delivering the West Camden Water Recycling Plant Amplification project alongside Downer. Speaking to the Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade, John Vida, BMD Constructions General Manager, New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory, said the contract is a testament to BMD’s focus on bolstering capability in the water sector nationally. “Over the last two years, we’ve seen some great success in the water and wastewater sector nationally, including nabbing the contracts for the Western Treatment Plant in Victoria, continuing the second stage of Townsville’s Haughton Pipeline Project and the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline project in North Queensland earlier this year. “As a privately owned Australian company, BMD offers Sydney Water a strategically formed design and construction team comprised of exclusive specialist partners and we’re looking forward to maximising our collaborative partnership to de-risk delivery, optimise construction program and maximise whole-of-life considerations,” Mr Vida said. The Richmond System Wastewater Upgrade will increase the region’s WRP and WWTP capacity by 80% to help Sydney Water meet its Environmental Project Authority licence requirements. Major construction will commence in late 2023, with the project forecast for completion late 2025.
