BMD Constructions awarded Melton Highway level crossing removal

After a competitive tender process, The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) has chosen BMD Constructions to remove the Melton Highway level crossing at Sydenham, Victoria, with works on the new road bridge to start this summer. The new road bridge will provide three traffic lanes, bike lanes and footpaths in each direction. By raising the road over the rail line, the project will create paths and open space that will better connect the neighbourhood, which was a key issue raised by the local community during consultation. The new bridge will carry vehicles safely over the train line, removing the dangerous crossing that frustrates thousands of motorists every day. The final project design incorporates a number of improvements as a result of community feedback that was received earlier this year. These include adding stairs to enable pedestrians to safely cross the railway line, adding an extra traffic lane in each direction, providing lighting underneath the bridge to improve safety and amenity and a wider bridge structure that provides more open space under the east end of the bridge. A new two-way slip lane on the northern side of the highway with a signalised intersection at Overton Lea Boulevard, will allow motorists travelling along Victoria Road and Sydenham Road to access Melton Highway. Construction is expected to begin by February 2017 and completed by late 2018. You can view the Melton Highway, Sydenham level crossing removal fly-over here.
