BMD partner with Major Road Projects Victoria to deliver the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade

We are thrilled to be Major Road Projects Victoria’s (MRPV) construction partner in delivering the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade project for the section between Barwarre Road and Marshalltown Road south of Geelong. As part of the upgrade, the BMD works will include:

  • duplicating 1.1 kilometres of Barwon Heads Road between Barwarre Road and Marshalltown Road from two lanes to four lanes
  • building a new bridge over the railway line at Marshall, removing the level crossing
  • building a new walking and cycling path along Barwon Heads Road to make the journey safer and improve access to the local area
  • building a service road to connect Norcott Road and Barwon Heads Road
  • installing new street lighting, road signage, drainage and landscaping.

The project interfaces with Barwon Heads Road Upgrade Work Package 1 at Barwarre Road, Work Package 3 at Marshalltown Road and the Geelong Line Upgrade project delivered by Rail Projects Victoria. During the Project Development Phase, BMD and MRPV, together with our design associates AECOM, reassessed the one span reference bridge design, and transformed the design into a three-span bridge that will:

  • minimise ground improvement works
  • eliminate 500 metres of water relocation and 220 metres of Telstra relocation
  • reduce V/Line interface
  • eliminate the requirement for ground improvements under spans 1 and 3 of the new bridge and the 1350 millimetre and 900 millimetre diameter drains in the same location
  • maintain the existing alignment through initial critical activities
  • reduce the 100 tonne beam lift to 40 tonnes
  • reduce the reinforced earth wall volume
  • optimise staging to enable the bridge to be built offline, with minimal impacts to motorists
  • reduce the height and length of the bridge to limit the overall footprint of the new structure
  • provide future proofing options underneath the bridge
  • enable the walking and cycling path to be open earlier
  • ensure the level crossing is removed earlier.
